Who doesn’t love a great tasting chocolate spread! Here’s my version of a recipe that’s been doing the rounds of late, originally posted on Hemsley+Hemsley and dubbed “BBtella” for its similarity to that wicked chocolate-hazelnut spread the whole world loves, the difference being its use of… wait for it… black beans. But don’t let that put you off – if you ate the spread blindfolded, you’d never guess it has beans in it. All the beans do is pack a punch on the nutrition side – they’re seriously rich in protein! My tweak to the BBtella recipe is the addition of orange zest – it gives it a fantastic zing!
Ingredients1 cup hazelnuts (skins off)
1 can black beans (rinsed and drained)
4 tbsp cocoa
4 tbsp syrup
3 tbsp coconut oil
½ tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla essence
pinch of salt
zest of 1 orange (finely zested)
Method
- Whizz the hazelnuts into a fine powder using a blender
- Place the hazelnut powder with all the rest of the ingredients into a large bowl and blend. (It’s pretty thick and pasty so easiest using a stick blender).
- All done – easy as that!
* makes about 2 jars worth and will keep in fridge for three weeks… although once tasted, that’s very unlikely!
